I’ve been so busy programming. A web application and a web service occupied me all the time in recent months.

But worth it. A group of media in my country, Portugal, is making good use of my newsroom intelligence service (more on this shortly). And the web app “Topics” proved its worth and I am now to internationalize it (a French television will join the portuguese newspapers Jornal de Negócios and Correio da Manhã, which already use the web app Topics).

I intend to share some experiences. The most recent is the use of Varnish as a HTTP accelerator. It rocks — and it will save you big money in IT resources.

I’m a Portuguese journalist and writer. Did almost everything in newspapers with a typewriter, a phone and a telex machine in the eighties, a CP/M computer and a CompuServe account in the eighties and the Internet in the nineties. I wrote a lot about technology and networking. Yes, a lot, enough. Now I prefer to code and teach.

This is my blog about the new skills a journalist can learn to do an effective job in a world totally full of data, as well as the effects of openness of information and governance around the world.

Skills &languages

I use mainly PHP and Linux shell scripting. A few Perl here and there. Learning Python and Javascript now. I can run a server in a few minutes on the Amazon cloud services (AWS, EC2, S3). I can tweak a MySQL or an Apache with relative success and be proud.
